I’m very lucky that “working” includes things like getting ready for the Comfort Cases sewing day this week. First thing this morning I began cutting tumbler shapes that will become a section of small quilts for the effort. After running several prints through the die cutter, I began stitching the pieces one to the next. In order to pair and stitch them correctly, I pinned each set, and organized the pile on my knee. I was humming along when I reached for a set and found a stink bug setting on top of the pile. Ugh, ugh, ugh! How did it manage to land there without making any noise? Why do stink bugs think they are welcome in the sewing room?! You would have been proud of me as I calmly stood up, opened the front door, and tossed him out - without letting go of the fabric! I’m carefully checking each piece before I pick it up this evening!

Wishing you uninterrupted, uneventful stitching sessions this week,

Mary Beth

Pi Day at QC

Friday ~ March 14th

Consider stopping in tomorrow (3/14) as we mark Pi Day! As you probably know, Pi is the mathematical constant (3.14) that expresses the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The “holiday” dates to 1988 when a San Francisco physicist dreamed up the event to encourage interest in math and science. As quilters we know it’s a perfect holiday - one that celebrates a shape that finds its way into many different traditional and contemporary quilts. On the 14th we will share quilts that include circles, we will share a fabric treat (needless to say, a print that features circles) and you might even be able to snag a little piece of pie - talk about a sweet event!

Comfort Cases project ~ Sewing Day!

Saturday ~ March 15th ~ 10:30am-2:30pm

Last year we supported an effort, coordinated by Stacey Lee Creative, benefiting Comfort Cases. The organization provides filled backpacks for children entering the foster care system. The call was, and is, for small quilts (30” x 40” for babies and 50” x 50” for older children) to add to the other things in the backpacks (which include new pajamas, a book, travel size toiletries, a tiny stuffed animal,...). After visiting the organization headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland we are even more committed to the effort! We experienced a truly dedicated, organized, welcoming, and efficient nonprofit! Quilts will be gathered in both April and May this year, giving everyone a little longer to finish them up! We would love to have you join the project (working either on your own or with a group). Consider joining us this Saturday, March 15th, from 10:30am to 2:30pm to learn about the project, and to do some sewing. During the session we will demo several pieced designs that can be made in the correct size, those that will work when rolled and placed in the backpacks. Bring your machine, sewing supplies and the quilt you are working on (or work on one of the ones we have started). Please pre-register

Fee: this one is different - the fee is travel size toiletries that will be donated along with the quilts!

QC Christmas Club

Wednesday ~ March 19th ~ 10:30am

Our second Christmas club meeting of the year will be held next Wednesday (3-19-25). We will present the next project from our textbook (Quilted Projects For All Seasons) and share other ideas for handmade items that would make great gifts. There is sure to be inspiring show and tell, and there is always a little gift - we would love to have you join us! Fee $6.00

Directly after the Christmas Club meeting we will be working on making tote bags for a new charitable effort (we will stitch for about two hours). We would love to have you bring your machine - because as they say, many hands make light work!

Don’t forget - the Three Rivers Quilters show is just around the corner - April 3rd, 4th and 5th at the Loft Conference Centers at Southpointe! The show always offers an amazing quilt display, vendors, short lectures, and the chance to enter several different drawings. My favorite show raffle item each year is for the show quilt. This year the quilt is Pop Star - designed and made by Brenda Houtz of Inner Piece Designs. The quilt is wonderful - get a sneak peek when you visit the shop - it’s on display here now!

fizz image

Can you imagine being surrounded by new fabric every day?! Talk about tempting! The newest group to come through the door is Fizz by Giucy Giuce. The little dots sprinkled across the fabric really do seem to be inspired by the fizz of a favorite soda - the great color combinations will add pizzazz to your next project! Be sure to check out the free Fizz pattern on the Andover website - the traditional style pattern is anything but when worked in these great prints!

Fabric $13.00 per yard
