Do you ever jump to a conclusion and later wonder, “What was I thinking?” When I opened the shop last Monday I made my usual circuit - find my way to the light switches, drop off my basket, head to the back corner to plug in a light,... As long as I kept moving everything seemed fine, but when I slowed down it seemed chilly in the shop, very chilly. Back to the corner I went to check the thermostat. As I looked at it, I honestly thought how strange it was that the little red pointer (it’s an older style thermostat), the piece that points to the numbers, was gone… In hindsight, that was a pretty strange thought. As it turns out, the thermostat was fine, it was the furnace that wasn’t! Who would have guessed, if the temperature falls below 50° the pointer would still be there, you just wouldn’t see it?! I figure you guys must have wondered why we were working in jackets and gloves… It took two days for the gracious and skilled furnace repair person to get it back in operation - he is now one of our favorite people!

Wishing you warmth even if you aren’t wrapped in a quilt,

Mary Beth

This Saturday (3-1-25) those in our beginning of the month pieced Saturday Sampler program will meet at 9:00am. We will share information about things happening in the shop, and then move on to the second block in the series (passing the kit and sharing additional piecing information). Be sure to bring your completed block from last month in order to receive the second kit as our gift!

Binding Demo ~ Saturday, March 1st, 11:00am-12:30pm

Next up in our demo series is a session focused on binding a quilt. You will be able to watch as binding is applied to the edges of a quilted piece, and you will be able to take a close look at several different bound projects. Different techniques will be explained - several worked entirely by machine, and one that involves some hand stitching. Stop in whenever you would like during the session (held upstairs at our side counter) - the information will be repeated several times - until we’ve answered all your questions!

Comfort Cases project ~ Sewing Day!

Saturday ~ March 15th ~ 10:30am-2:30pm

Last year we supported an effort, coordinated by Stacey Lee Creative, benefiting Comfort Cases. The organization provides filled backpacks for children entering the foster care system. The call was, and is, for small quilts (30” x 40” for babies and 50” x 50” for older children) to add to the other things in the backpacks (which include new pajamas, a book, travel size toiletries, a tiny stuffed animal,...). After visiting the organization headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland we are even more committed to the effort! We experienced a truly dedicated, organized, welcoming, and efficient nonprofit! Quilts will be gathered in both April and May this year, giving everyone a little longer to finish them up! We would love to have you join the project. Consider being part of the Comfort Cases sewing day we are hosting in the shop on Saturday, March 15th from 10:30am to 2:30pm. During the session we will demo several pieced designs that can be made in the correct size, those that will work when rolled and placed in the backpacks. A portion of one of the projects, and a supply list for that one, will be available after March 3rd.

Fee: this one is different - the fee is travel size toiletries that will be donated along with the quilts!

Pi Day

Friday ~ March 14th

Consider stopping in on 3/14 as we mark Pi Day! As you probably know, Pi (3.14) is the mathematical constant that expresses the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Pi day dates to 1988 when a San Francisco physicist dreamed up the event to encourage interest in math and science. As quilters we know it’s a perfect holiday - one that celebrates a shape that finds its way into many different traditional and contemporary quilts. On the 14th we will share quilts that include circles, we will share a fabric treat (needless to say, a print that features circles) and you might even be able to snag a little piece of pie - talk about a sweet event!

Boy, did this month fly by - I can’t believe this is the last day to vote in this year’s ByAnnie Local Quilt Shop Contest! In case you haven’t gotten to it yet, I thought you might want the link to the contest. We would love to have you vote at www.LQSContest.com/vote.

Last week someone asked if we had the Thirty-One fabric collection. I said no… I should have said not yet! The prints in Paula Nadelsterns’ newest group (her thirty-first for Benartex!) arrived today! The gloriously colored twelve bolt group features three prints - Electric Lace, Wingspan, and Sprinkles. Each features the intricate, kaleidoscopic artwork for which Paula is known. I see some “fussy cut” blocks in my future!

Fabric $12.80 per yard

The Three Rivers Quilters show is just around the corner - April 3rd, 4th and 5th at the Loft Conference Centers at Southpointe! The show raffle quilt, Pop Star - designed and made by Brenda Houtz of Inner Piece Designs, has just arrived in the shop. You need to see it up close - it’s truly spectacular!!!
