Quilters Corner - 8-23-2024

Dear Friends,

Pittsburgh natives seem to find one another, no matter where they are… My youngest realized recently that a young woman who graduated a year before her, from the same high school, lives very close to where she currently lives. She and one of her friends from college went to visit her high school friend earlier in the week. It was game night, so meeting new people and having fun was the plan. Out of the blue, her high school friend's boyfriend asked youngest if she had ever been to “Holy’s”. With a confused look, she said she had no idea where he was talking about. At that point, her Pittsburgh native friend was almost rolling on the floor with laughter as she asked youngest if she had ever been to the fish market in the strip. “Oh you mean Wholey's”, youngest exclaimed. The boyfriend insisted they were both pronouncing it incorrectly - as if a Chicago native has any idea how to pronounce that, or a whole slew of other Pittsburgh words!!!

We spent yesterday selecting fabrics, and cutting them, for your next pieced Saturday Sampler block kit. Those in the end of the month group will meet this Saturday (8-24-24) at 9:00am to share news about things happening in the shop, and to receive the new kit and information to make your piecing more accurate and enjoyable. Be sure to bring your completed block from last month for show and tell - that’s one of my favorite parts of each session!

Also this Saturday, those in our Stash Management Club will meet at 10:30am. This is the last session in this series (membership in the new series, beginning in September, is just $10.00!). Each meeting begins with member show and tell, and then moves on to ideas for organizing our sewing spaces and stories of the progress we have made in our spaces. Next up will be a pattern for a quilt that can be made with the fabrics you have in your collection. Great fun - we would love to have you join us!

We would like to congratulate, and thank, everyone for their amazing pillowcase making achievements! Over the course of the first two weeks in August you donated 2773 pillowcases! As I promised the youngest sewist in the group (she is just 5 years old), every pillowcase will go to a child at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh - adding a bit of cheer to what can be a very scary place. We are currently going through the paperwork to figure out the winners for the different race categories, but I really feel we all win by bringing a smile to others!

I couldn’t resist the twenty newest Speckled colors. Rashida’s Ruby Star collection “basic” is anything but! The deep rich solid background colors of the pieces are accented with tiny splashes of what looks like splattered paint. The new pieces work perfectly with one another, with other Ruby Star prints (like the Ten Years of Magic panels!), and with virtually every other brightly colored group in the shop! I fear you are going to need to get here soon in order to snag some!

We unpacked a box of Moda Jelly Rolls earlier today. The 2 1/2” strip sets represented several of the newest Moda fabric collections in the shop. You will find Snowman Gatherings, Shimmer, Sunrise Side, among many others - all perfect for our upcoming Mega Star class on September 20th, and for Jelly Roll Day on September 21st.
